What is TUDCA, What Does It Do?

TUDCA has recently entered the radar, especially of athletes who use heavy supplements and those looking for liver and bile support. Although its name seems complicated, it is basically a compound related to the bile acids in our body.

It is more accurate to think of TUDCA not as an “overnight liver detox product,” but as a specialized supplement that can support bile flow and cellular stress processes.

What is the function of TUDCA?

TUDCA stands for tauroursodeoxycholic acid. It is one of the more water-soluble types of bile acids. While bile helps digest fats, it also plays a role in removing certain waste products from the liver.

TUDCA has been researched for its effects on bile flow, the protection of cells under stress, and liver functions. Therefore, it may be included in liver support, digestive, and metabolic health products.

Why do athletes use it?

A heavy nutrition program, numerous supplements, and certain performance-enhancing substances can place an additional burden on the liver. For this reason, some athletes use TUDCA as “cycle support.” However, there is an important limit here: TUDCA does not make substances that can damage the liver safe.

If liver enzymes are rising, the cause must be investigated rather than just adding supplements. Alcohol, medications, fatty liver, infections, and performance products should be evaluated separately.

How is it used daily?

The 250–500 mg range is common in supplement products. Some protocols split the daily amount. Taking it with food, especially with a meal containing fat, can be practical.

The choice of dose depends on the purpose of the product and the person's health status. The “the higher, the better” approach does not apply here either. If diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, or bile-related complaints occur, use should be reconsidered.

Are TUDCA and milk thistle the same?

No. Milk thistle is an herbal supplement containing silymarin. TUDCA, on the other hand, is a bile acid derivative. Although both fall under the category of liver support, they do not work through the same mechanism.

Some combination products contain NAC, TUDCA, choline, and milk thistle together. In such a product, it is necessary to look at the actual dose of each component; having a large number of ingredients does not always mean that an effective amount is present.

Who needs to be careful?

Individuals with gallstones, bile duct obstruction, severe liver disease, or those who use regular medication should seek professional advice. Jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, or severe upper right abdominal pain are not symptoms that should be brushed off with a supplement.

TUDCA can be an interesting supplement in the right person; however, the best liver program is to limit alcohol, approach a healthy weight, reduce unnecessary products, and monitor lab work.
